Standing in a field near Birchover, Derbyshire, these huge rocks were stood upright around 5000 years ago by neolithic tribes. Nobody knows why for certain.
This area is covered in stone circles, burial mounds and other ancient monuments, and always a great place for photography, in any weather.
Some people say the standing stones are magnetic points, and others point at lay lines and such like, but I don't know, I just like it that they exist.

Great shot, and very interesting subject. I only wish there was a person or something in the picture to give more of an idea of scale of the rocks.

Art Monkey, some say these stones turn into maidens and dance in the field on moonlit nights....most of these stories were probably related by people on their way home from the ale house.....
As to their size, about 7 feet of stone sticks out the ground, but it is estimated that its about the same length lies underground.... As to people, I didn't see anyone in the 3 hours I was wandering about the area, it can get quite spooky around there at times.

Like I said, Richard, I would love to see the glories of England. In the meantime I will make due with your depictions... and they are most fabulous depictions. Love the light on this one... the golden tones set the mood so beautifully. When are you going to Tintagel? Love King Arthur stuff!
