Cairn

The following few days of images are all from the top of Kinder Scout in Derbyshire, England.

Cairns are piles of stones usually left at prominent waymarks, like tops of mountains, burial sites, or route markers. It used to be a tradition to carry a stone from the bottom of the mountain to deposit it at the top, but I think most people now find a stone to place on the pile when their up the top already.

Wow, again, awesome (the sheer breadth of it!) and amazing ( the angle!), Richard! The grey hues here are especially striking to me, and I love how well they complement that stunning blue and white sky! Really like this one. :)

I really appreciate the face that you are sharing a part of your history. I find the image really interesting in that the rocks are used as a path leading the viewer to a pile of rocks.
