This Yorkshire river system has been used for boat transportation for centuries, in fact an act was passed in 1699 to improve its navigability.

Today it is mainly used for industrial transport of goods and coal, so its big enough and deep enough for big tankers and barges.

For a little narrowboat like mine, this poses lots of hazards, as meeting a ship coming towards you is always a touch unnerving.

Anyway, this is fairly rare, as most of the time you see no other water traffic for hour after hour.
