In this image, I'm leaving the locks at the vilaage of Keadby, and heading into the Tidal Trent.
Now narrowboats aren't really designed for tidal river systems, so this journey is always an adventure. You can only leave Keadby after giving the lock-keeper 24hrs notice, and then only when the river tide is high enough to get over the sand bank that builds up at the lock entrance. Once out on the big river and in the tide, its full throttle for the next five hours or so to get to the first safe floating moorings at Torksey lock. For the 'Irene', with her 50 year old 1.5L BMC diesel engine, its a struggle because after about 4 hours the tide will turn. After that, the poor 'Irene' slows to about 4 knots, and we make it to Torksey at a snails pace.

Excellent shot all on it's own... but with the story even better!! So this isn't just a slow and easy float along the canals.... sounds like so much fun.

Superb composition and narrative! Love the weathered stone wall and this wonderful angle on Irene. This fantastic piece really evokes a striking sense of impending adventure, lying in wait for you just ahead!! Be careful, Richard!! :)

This can also be a very symbolic image. The doors in a sense are opening and the beautiful nature and life on the other side of the water beckons the viewer.
