El ChorroPosted by Richard Irwin (Belper, United Kingdom) on 7 November 2008 in Landscape & Rural. My Favorite Place I really thought hard about this challenge, but my mind kept coming back to this one place, 'El Chorro', a secret little valley wedged between towering limestone peaks in the southern Spanish province of Andalucia. I have spent a lot of time in El Chorro across many visits spanning years, and it has somehow worked its way into my soul. I first stumbled there in 1990, crossed the infamous 'Camino Del Rey' a hundred times or more,(alas no longer there), and was magnetised by the place, forever entwined, so that I know I will always return; to watch the vultures wheeling across the blue Andalucian sky, to hear the roar of water through the gorge, to sit in the shade of a fig, olive or orange tree, and listen to the Cicadas and tree frogs. I once lived and climbed in the valley for several months; I nearly died in there more than once; it comes to me in dreams; I have revealed its secrets only to my closest friends. Someone shot a video clip of the walkway into El Chorro My image is a scan from a 35mm slide that I shot around 1991.
